National Public Works Week
The theme for the American Public Works Association’s (APWA) National Public Works Week (May 18-24) is “The Future is Now.” The objective is to raise awareness of public works issues and increase confidence in public works employees.
To help public works agencies achieve these objectives, APWA created the web-based National Public Works Week How-To Guide, available at www. apwa.net.
Roping in Trenchless Technology
The No-Dig Show, “Roping in Trenchless Technology,” in Dallas, Texas, April 27 to May 2, will present more than 100 technical papers. Besides lateral and mainline trenchless discussions, an open forum will address water, sewer, and stormwater issues.
The Common Ground Alliance is sponsoring a Damage Investigation and Claims Resolution Workshop. NASSCO will administer its Pipeline Assessment Certification and Manhole Assessment and Certification programs. The North American Society for Trenchless Technology will offer a Good Practices course on New Installation Methods.
Pre- and post-conference short courses and workshops include An Intro to Trenchless Technology: New Construction Techniques and Rehabilitation Methods, and Horizontal Directional Drilling Good Practices Guidelines. For more information, go to www.nodigshow.com.
Urban Water Management
Urban Water Management, An Integrated Water Quality Conference and Exhibition, is March 31 to April 2 at the Louisville (Ky.) Marriott. It will focus on the integration of stormwater best management practices, Phase II regulations, green infrastructure, and funding of municipal water management programs.
Presentations will cover design, construction, maintenance, and emerging technology for urban water quality. Tom Schueler, director of the Chesapeake Stormwater Network, will give the keynote address. The featured short course is “Stormwater for the Practicing Engineer (and Scientist)” by Gary R. Minton, Ph.D., P.E. For more information, go to http://uwm08.events.pennnet.com/fl/index.cfm.
Feds act on perchlorate and chromium
Release of the Food and Drug Administration study of exposure to perchlorate in food products will help U.S. EPA decide whether to regulate perchlorate in drinking water. The FDA assessment found that even the highest dietary levels of perchlorate among toddlers is less than EPA’s reference dose of 0.7 micrograms/kg/day. A final regulatory determination for perchlorate and other chemicals on the second Contaminant Candidate List is expected later this year.
A provision added in Congress to the fiscal 2008 EPA spending bill would have the agency regulate chromium 6 on its own rather than be covered as it is now under a standard for total chromium. The National Toxicology Program found that while chromium 6 is a human carcinogen when inhaled, the effects of long-term exposure to hexavalent chromium compounds in water supplies are uncertain.
