Sewer History Exhibit

A traveling exhibit on the history of sewage conveyance systems from 3500 B.C. through the 1930s is part of Utility Construction EXPO ’09 on March 4-6 at the Phoenix (Ariz.) Convention Center Exhibit Hall. The photos and artifacts of Jon Schladweiler, historian of the Arizona Water & Pollution Control Association, offer insight into the origins of modern sewer systems and bring to light the contributions of sewer builders, engineers and operators. Cooperative Effort

The Kansas Water Environment Association reports that the Mutual Aid Program for utilities is finalized. It coordinates assistance between neighboring utilities in large-scale emergencies such as tornadoes, floods and ice storms. Klotz President of ASCE

The American Society of Civil Engineers elected D. Wayne Klotz, P.E., D.WRE., F.ASCE, president at its annual meeting. He is president of Klotz Associates Inc., a civil engineering firm in Houston, Texas. Other 2009 officers include:

Global Standardization of Toilets

During the November 2008 World Toilet Summit, the World Toilet Organization (WTO) and International Code Council signed a memorandum of understanding to introduce initiatives that promote global codes for the design and construction of toilets. The WTO, a network of 151 member organizations from 53 countries, is supporting leading health officials who advocate replacing flush toilets with dry toilets that separate urine from feces without using water.

AWWA Debuts Streamlines

Streamlines, a new biweekly electronic newsletter from the American Water Works Association, merges E-MainStream and WaterWeek. Seventy percent of readers surveyed asked for a single, brief e-newsletter and more consolidation of e-mail communications from AWWA. Members also requested more information on water resources, regulatory compliance, trends and utility news. Streamlines is e-mailed to members and posted at www.awwa.org.

EPA Progress Report

The U.S. EPA posted its FY 2008 Performance and Accountability Report describing the agency’s environmental and financial progress over the past year. The report highlights the EPA’s efforts to reduce air pollution, improve water quality, clean up Superfund sites, increase health and environmental safety through pesticide and chemical evaluation, and avoid pollution through strong enforcement actions. Angelo Chairs Committee

Dave Angelo, vice president and general manager of Fairbanks Morse Pump (Kansas City, Kan.), was named chairman of the Water & Wastewater Equipment Manufacturers Association Inc.
