Association News

PPI Educational Awareness Campaign

The Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI) began an educational awareness campaign targeting city mayors and municipal staff members. The “Be A Hero — Building Community” campaign focuses on the benefits of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe for water, sewer and stormwater systems, natural gas lines, and fiber optic cable runs.

“We undertook this initiative to call attention to HDPE pipe as the correct solution to rebuilding and modernizing America’s disintegrating underground infrastructure,” says Tony Radoszewski, executive director. Visit http://plasticpipe.org or call 469/499-1044.

Hearing Loss Prevention Award

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the National Hearing Conservation Association created the Safe-in-Sound award for organizations that have the best hearing-loss prevention programs. An additional award will be given for an innovation in hearing loss prevention such as a new product, training program, or software program. For more information, visit www.safeinsound.us.

Lifetime Achievement Awards

The American Society of Civil Engineers announced the winners of its Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Lifetime Achievement Awards. The 2008 winners are:

• Ernest T. Smerdon, Ph.D., P.E. — Education

• Gerald E. Galloway, Ph.D., P.E. — Government

Florida Scholarship Program

The Florida Stormwater Association is accepting applications to its scholarship program for students interested in stormwater research, management or finance. The application deadline is Aug. 8. Download the form at www.florida-stormwater.org.

Best Tasting Water

A panel of judges named West Anderson Water District the Best Testing Water in South Carolina for the second time. Entries are judged for clarity, smell, taste, and aftertaste. The contest is hosted by the South Carolina Rural Water Association. West Anderson Water District is managed by Steve Wilson. The system shares ownership over the Anderson Regional Joint Water System with 13 other water systems.

Wastewater Infrastructure Security

The American Society of Civil Engineers’ Environmental and Water Resources Institute is conducting a public comment period on Guidelines for the Physical Security of Wastewater Utilities. The period ends May 20.

The standard applies to physical security for wastewater treatment plants, collection systems, pumping stations, and wastewater/stormwater system support facilities.
