The first American Water Awards (AWA) will be presented at the American Water Summit (AWI) on Nov. 14, in Chicago. Award categories include Utility Performer of the Year, Partnership Performance of the Year, Environmental Project of the Year, and Technology Project of the Year.
“We believe it’s important to recognize companies and municipalities who are thinking forward with regard to solving water and wastewater challenges in this country,” says Brady Porche, American Water Intelligence editor, host of the awards. “Whether it’s a project designed to operate a municipal utility more efficiently or a technology that can help an industry or a water utility stay in compliance with ever-tightening federal regulations at a lower cost, true creativity can be a game changer.”
Technology project awards are given to nominees that have implemented a new technology in a completed water or wastewater project.
Finalists will make their cases with six-minute PowerPoint presentations at the conference, followed by a question-and-answer segment. Audience members will vote live for the winners.
Technology project nominees include:
- American Water – NPXpress wastewater technology: The nutrient removal technology reduces electrical costs by operating at a lower oxygen level and reduces chemical addition by 80 to 100 percent.
- Infilco Degremont – iBio Process, GenOn Conemaugh Generating Station, New Florence, Pa.: The biological heavy metals removal system is designed to help coal-fired power plants achieve consistent compliance with imminent regulations on discharge of selenium, mercury and hexavalent chromium.
- Rentricity, Inc. – Flow-to-Wire system, Keene, N.H., Water Treatment Facility: The 62 kW dual-turbine energy recovery Flow-to-Wire system converts excess pressure in water pipes into clean electricity. The system includes two reverse pump turbine generators and appurtenant process controls installed in parallel to an existing pressure reduction valve.
- Carollo Engineers – Pasteurization Technology Group and the City of Ventura, Calif., reclaimed water pasteurization and energy recovery project: The groups built the world’s first demonstration-scale reclaimed water pasteurization system. The 350 gpm system will use waste heat from turbines to disinfect up to 21 mgd peak flow of effluent that meets California’s Title 22 standards for unrestricted water reuse applications.
“Our editorial team selected the projects that were most effective and imaginative in addressing the challenges they were set out to overcome,” says Porche. “Each of our nominees has demonstrated a certain level of ingenuity in tackling issues such as environmental compliance, energy efficiency and operational cost savings. It will be our AWI delegates who ultimately decide which project gets the award.”

Winners will be awarded at the dinner ceremony during the conference.
Porche says, “People who are changing the game should be rewarded, particularly in a time in which funding for water and wastewater capital improvement projects is getting harder to obtain.
“This market can be very resistant to new technology, but if utility operators see how an innovative system can both save them money and keep them in line with the EPA and their respective state regulators, the technology has great potential to gain traction. When that happens everyone benefits, including customers, who are ensured a safe, reliable water supply.”
