A construction worker who was part of a crew working on a sewer main replacement project in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, died last week when a water main broke and the trench he was working in filled with water, trapping the man.

The body of Davide Nascimento was pulled from the trench around noon local time on July 31 following a nearly three-hour recovery effort. The accident occurred around 7:45 a.m., according to a report by MassLive.com. A number of emergency crews responded to the scene to stabilize the trench and assist with the recovery.

"How and why the trench filled up with water is under investigation, but there was a lot of water when we first arrived on scene and so we had to pump the water out and turn service off," Longmeadow Town Manager Stephen Crane told reporters at the scene.

A father of two, Nascimento worked for A. Martins & Sons Construction based in nearby Ludlow. Crane said a crew from the department of public works came in to repair the water main and restore water service to about 50 homes that has lost water during the recovery operation.

An online fundraiser for Nascimento has raised more than $47,000 as of the morning of Aug. 4, including a $500 donation each by Baltazar Contractors and Baystate Blasting, both also based in Ludlow.

“He is an amazing husband, son, brother, friend, and most of all, father,” wrote Channelle Sanches, who created the gofundme page. “He leaves behind his beautiful wife, Stephanie, and two beautiful children, Cristiano and Savanna, as well as brothers, parents and many, many other close friends and family.”
