From urban Weymouth, Mass., to agriculturally rich Escondido, Calif., wastewater systems collect used water and sewage, remove contaminants and discharge clean water back into rivers and lakes for future use. While every community faces different challenges including repairing 100+ year old pipes, water shortages resulting from drought, decreasing water tables, and public health concerns, all need to minimize leaks and overall system performance.

Aiding in leak detection and wastewater treatment pipe maintenance are labels and tags – used by cities and counties to identify thousands of miles of pipes, their contents, diameter and their directional flow. With the many substances used for water treatment, a standardized pipe marker color-coding system is important. Using a combination of general base colors and specific color banding, the DuraLabel Wastewater Treatment Pipe Marking Guide – available free – provides a standard color-coding system to effectively identify pipe contents.

The release of this new guide is timely, given these facts:

  • Wastewater facilities are at risk from floods – similar to what happened recently on the East Coast during Superstorm Sandy.
  • An estimated 20,000 publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) provide wastewater collection, treatment and disposal to about 200 million people in the U.S., according to a 2008 EPA survey.
  • Wastewater infrastructure including collection systems are subject to deterioration, repair and replacement. Rather than investing in costly new wastewater treatment systems, public works departments are focusing on maintaining facilities.
  • According to a 2002 EPA study, the amount of deteriorated pipes will increase from 10 to 44 percent of the total network from 1980 to 2020 due to our nation’s aging infrastructure.

“Given our 40 plus year history in the industrial arena, we’ve cultivated an expertise in pipe marking, industrial labeling systems and labeling supplies designed to endure the most demanding industrial, plant and facility environments,” says Steve Stephenson Graphic Products chief marketing officer. “Our pipe marking supplies can withstand chemical exposure and will perform when temperatures rise to 300 degrees F and plunge to -40 degrees F. Our wide format labeling systems are perfect for the high-visibility identification needed on pipes as large as 12 feet in diameter.”

To underscore its commitment to industrial safety and operational efficiency, Graphic Products provides a growing selection of free published articles, best practice guides, handbooks, webinars, blogs and informational videos.
