Trucks + Get AlertsA judge has sentenced John Caldwell of Washington Township, New Jersey, to five years’ probation for violating the Water Pollution Control Act after he used a vacuum truck to empty his swimming pool.
Caldwell pleaded guilty to causing or risking widespread injury or damage, The Associated Press reports.
Prosecutors say Caldwell borrowed the vac truck from his employer in June 2014 to empty his pool. He then discharged the spoils into a storm drain located in front of his house. Caldwell allegedly did not know the truck’s 3,600-gallon tank contained oil, which ended up in nearby Mantua Creek and Spring Lake after the disposal.
Caldwell — who was subsequently fired from his job as a vacuum truck operator — was also ordered to perform 150 hours of community service and pay more than $7,000 in fines and overtime costs, according to the report.
