Are you confident the fire hydrants in your water system will operate in an emergency? All hydrants should be inspected on a regular basis to ensure reliability, while periodic flushing can improve water quality.

A number of circumstances can affect a hydrant's performance, including vandalism, accidental damage, wear and tear, and mechanical malfunction.

It is recommended that dry barrel hydrants be inspected twice per year — in the spring and in the fall. Wet barrel hydrants should be inspected annually.

This video covers the basic inspection and flushing of a fire hydrant.
