A Natural Fit: Philadelphia's Innovative Approach to Stormwater Management

Nature-based approaches, creative regulations and incentivized retrofits are just a few ways the City of Philadelphia is working toward treating stormwater as a resource rather than a waste product

The Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) Water Department manages stormwater in a number of innovative ways. Some of those approaches, according to Marc Cammarata, deputy water commissioner for planning and environmental services, include nature-based methods, creative stormwater development regulations, incentivized stormwater retrofits, and direct public retrofit investments in areas of green streets and facilities. “We try to manage water in a sustainable way, we try to treat stormwater as a resource instead of a waste product, and really, we’re trying to bring about a positive outcome in the city,” says Cammarata.
