For our staff, serving our industry and setting standards for the assessment and rehabilitation of underground infrastructure goes beyond the doors of NASSCO. It requires our time and contribution to other organizations with similar goals.

Two of the organizations we work closely with are the Water Environment Federation and the local member association of the Chesapeake Water Environment Association. Issues such as strategic planning, financial policies and procedures, sponsorships and succession planning are critical to nonprofit organizations like NASSCO, WEF and CWEA, and our growing cooperation and support help raise the bar for the organizations and the industry as a whole.

My personal involvement in these organizations spans over two decades. In 1990, soon after applying for membership in the Water Pollution Control Federation, it changed its name and I became a member of WEF. In 1999, I was a founding member of CWEA’s Collections Systems Committee and chaired the committee in 2005. From 2010-11, I served as president of CWEA, during which time I initiated the Strategic Planning Committee and helped turn the Ecoletter Magazine, CWEA’s quarterly publication, from an expense to a revenue-generating publication. Currently serving the third year of a three-year term as CWEA’s WEF delegate supporting the Member Association Leadership Workgroup, I have had the opportunity to help develop a new Membership Recruiting and Retention Guidebook and provide five webinars for each of the guidebook’s chapters.

I have always been an advocate of industry collaboration, and in 2012 I had the honor to serve as one of the first board members of the Chesapeake Tri-Association Conference Committee. The CTA was created to facilitate the legal and financial requirements of running a conference and other functions in cooperation with Chesapeake Water Environment Association, the Chesapeake Section of the AWWA, and Water and Wastewater Operators Association, all of which serve the Maryland, Delaware and D.C. areas.

Our staff also has a strong history of supporting other industry associations. For example, Jane Bayer, NASSCO’s engineering technician, has been a member of WEF and CWEA for almost a decade. She is currently treasurer, a board member and an active participant in the Collections Systems Committee. In fact, she organized and oversaw the CSC’s Annual Ed Norton Open Golf Tournament for four years. The tournament, which draws over 120 wastewater professionals from

Baltimore and the surrounding area, donates proceeds to Water for People and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This is Jane’s seventh year serving as arrangements chair for the Tri-Association Conference in Ocean City, Maryland, which draws 140 exhibitors and over 800 attendees. Most recently, Jane presented at WEFMAX in Quebec City on CWEA’s approach to membership and retention.

As an organization, NASSCO’s partnership with WEF continues to grow. NASSCO provides WEF with content for two webinars per year, the most recent being The Benefits of PACP Version 7.0 in March and NASSCO Standard Specification Guidelines for CIPP, Manholes and More in June. The March webinar was the second highest attended webinar in WEF history. NASSCO makes a point of meeting with WEF staff in Alexandria, Virginia, a few times a year to discuss joint initiatives and where other collaboration can benefit our industry, such as workshops at WEFTEC and WEF Collections, technical content for webinars, the Sewer History Exhibit and other educational opportunities.
