The U.S. Water Alliance (USWA) announced it is seeking applicants for the position of president and chief executive officer to lead the nonprofit organization whose mission is to unite people and policy for water sustainability.

Position
Reporting to the board of directors, the president and chief executive officer has responsibility for the Alliance’s overall strategic direction and operations. The position is based in Washington, D.C.

General Responsibilities
The president will be responsible for executing the organization’s mission as set out in its strategic plan; manage staff and contractors; manage Board relations organizational planning and leadership, program development and management, and execution of the Alliance mission.

Responsibilities and Duties
Leadership and Management:

  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals
  • Report to and actively engage USWA board members
  • Motivate and lead event committees and councils and projects with members, partnering organizations, funders, alumni and volunteers
  • Develop, maintain and support a strong board of directors; serve as a nonvoting ex-officio member of each committee and council; seek and build board involvement with the Alliance’s strategic direction
  • Lead, coach, develop and retain USWA’s high-performing staff
  • Ensure effective systems to track organizational progress in meeting goals, assure financial integrity and communicate to the board, funders and other constituents
  • Regularly evaluate program components and make improvements

Fundraising and Communications:

  • Increase revenue generating and fundraising activities to support current programs and operations and enable organizational expansion
  • Develop and oversee execution of a strategic communications plan for all media from web and social media to external relations to create a stronger brand
  • Seek new opportunities to reinforce USWA’s role as a nationally-respected convener and facilitator on water related matters

Planning and New Business:

  • Complete a strategic business plan for expansion into new markets
  • Continue to grow the membership
  • Build new market partnerships and establish relationships with funders and political and community leaders
  • Strategically communicate the Alliance’s approach and models for regional and national programs

Qualifications
A successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to USWA’s mission. He/she will have proven experience in leading organizations or agencies, working with a board of directors or similar governance body, and communicating effectively in a variety of media and venues.

More specifically, a successful candidate will have:

  • At least 10 years of senior management experience with a track record of effectively leading staff at regional or national levels and proven knowledge and leadership in multiple segments of the water sector
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategies that resulted in organizational growth (finances, program and/or other impacts)
  • Demonstrated a commitment to quality in program development and management based on data-driven program evaluation
  • Shown excellence in organizational management with the ability to hire, inspire and coach high performing staff, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
  • Exhibited success working with a board of directors and in cultivating new directors
  • Strong fund raising, marketing and public relations skills.
  • Demonstrated mastery of written and verbal communications
  • Entrepreneurial, innovative and action-orientation towards business planning and public-private partnerships
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across cultures and interests
  • Earned an advanced degree from an accredited university

The position requires frequent, independent travel to locations around the country.

Compensation and Timing of Process
The board will negotiate an employment contract with the successful applicant. Compensation will be based upon the candidate’s experience and qualifications in line with the organization’s budget. Paid vacation, health care and other benefits will be included in a final compensation package.
