California's longstanding sewage overflow problem in Imperial Beach, primarily due to infrastructure issues and Tijuana's sewage spills, is intensifying due to sea level rise and climate change. A recent study by San Diego State University and Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers highlights how rising sea levels, elevating the groundwater table, are putting additional stress on the city's already vulnerable sewer system. Over a third of the sewer pipes, made of vitrified clay and ill-equipped to handle increased stress, are at risk.
