In a compelling blend of public outreach and education, the San Antonio Water System has released a new children’s book titled "Pipa’s Big Adventure," using a real-life rescue story to connect young audiences with the often-overlooked world of wastewater infrastructure.

The book is inspired by a 2023 incident in which SAWS crews rescued a puppy trapped in a sewer pipe — an event that garnered international media attention. In Pipa’s Big Adventure, the story is retold from the perspective of Pipa, the curious pup who explores the underground system and emerges safe and sound.

More than just a feel-good tale, the book introduces kids to the basics of sewer systems and responsible disposal habits, emphasizing why items like grease and wipes don’t belong in the drain. The story concludes with “Pipa’s Pledge,” a simple call to action designed to make kids sewer-smart.

“Children are natural advocates,” says Anne Hayden, SAWS director of communications. “We hope Pipa’s story sticks with them and inspires conversations at home.”

SAWS’ education team is already incorporating the book into school visits, and limited copies are being sold at SAWS customer centers. Proceeds benefit Project Agua, the utility’s bill assistance program, as well as the city’s animal shelter partner, Friends of Animal Care Services.
