Kansas City to Spend $2.5 Billion on Reducing Overflows

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will spend $2.5 billion over 25 years to make extensive improvements to its sewer systems, eliminating overflows of untreated sewage and reducing pollution levels in urban stormwater, according to the Justice Department and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Kansas City’s sewer system collects and receives domestic, commercial and industrial wastewater from approximately 650,000 people in the city and 27 neighboring communities. The system covers more than 420 square miles and includes seven wastewater treatment plants, 38 pumping stations and more than 2,800 miles of sewer lines. Since 2002, the city has experienced approximately 1,294 sewer overflows, including at least 138 unpermitted combined sewer overflows, 390 sanitary sewer overflows and 766 backups in buildings and private properties. The overflows result in the annual discharge of approximately 7 billion gallons of raw sewage into local waterways.

EPA Awards $194,000 Grant for Water Infrastructure

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $194,000 grant to East Prairie, Mo., for storm sewer system improvements. The city received a similar grant in 2009. Since 2006, four sewer collapses have caused flooding within the city. The grants will help apply lining to 2,000 feet of the storm sewer.
