MSW offers manual on algae management

Manual of Water Supply Practice includes rich illustrations

The American Water Works Association has published a new AWWA Manual of Water Supply Practices: M57, Algae: Source to Treatment.

Algae dates as far back as 1.7 billion years and are a fundamental part of daily life, acting as fertilizers, fuels, food, pollution controllers and clothing dye. However, there is evidence that recent human activities have led to an increase in the frequency and severity of algae impairment of surface water. Such changes can cause degradation of watersheds and increased eutrophication in bodies of water. The control of algae and a water treatment plant’s ability to remove them from source water is important in delivering safe, palatable drinking water to the public.

M57, Algae: Source to Treatment addresses these issues and many more. The breadth of information in the manual is unique, covering all aspects of algae-related challenges in drinking water, including identification of algal species, the design and implementation of monitoring programs, and management and treatment strategies. Also included are taxonomic keys of the common genera for the included organisms and more than 450 color and black-and-white images.

The manual was written, reviewed and approved by an expert group of AWWA volunteer members who strove to arrive at a consensus that the information is technically accurate and reflects current best practices. It is available in AWWA online bookstore at http://www.awwa.org/bookstore.
