NASSCO was founded in 1976 to serve and advocate for contractors involved in the assessment, maintenance and rehabilitation of underground infrastructure. Now, 50 years later, NASSCO has grown to represent all segments of the trenchless technology industry including public agencies, which currently represent 24% of NASSCO’s total membership composition.

Involvement in NASSCO by system owners is growing in popularity because of the opportunities it offers to help shape the standards we all follow. Specifically, participation in NASSCO Committees allows public agencies to share challenges and needs while collaborating with other industry professionals to identify the best solutions via development of performance specification guidelines, good practice guidelines, technical videos, webinars and industry articles.

NASSCO recently released its Committee Goals for 2026/2027. A few of the highlights include:

Grouting:

  • Develop a grout calculator to measure how much material should be used based on pipe size, backfill material, etc.
  • Develop a Performance Specification Guideline for structural injection grouting.
  • Develop research objective and methodology for field study (nonexcavation) to measure longevity of grouting via retest and grout method using NASSCO’s Pipeline Packer Injection Capital Grouting Performance Specification Guideline.
  • Develop ITCP grouting course curriculum.

Lateral and building pipe:

  • Develop Good Practice Guideline to help system owners build lateral programs.
  • Partner with IAPMO on PSQ development and training for CIPP installation and inspection in building pipe.
  • Develop Good Practice Guideline on acceptance testing for laterals.

O&M:

  • Develop Good Practice Guideline for plug safety.
  • Develop Good Practice Guideline on bypass pumping.
  • Develop Good Practice Guideline for siphon cleaning and assessment.
  • Develop Performance Specification Guideline for sewer pipe cleaning.
  • Develop a Good Practice Guideline for protruding tap removal.

Pipe rehabilitation:

  • Develop Performance Specification Guideline on pipe bursting.
  • Develop Performance Specification Guideline on sliplining.

Pressure pipe:

  • Develop Performance Specification Guideline for FFRP.
  • Prepare and Deliver Force Main Rehabilitation vs. Replacement webinar.
  • Prepare and Deliver Force Main Inspections – “Where to Start?” webinar.
  • Prepare and Deliver AWWA Structural Classifications Explained webinar.

Sewer system rehabilitation:

  • Develop Good Practice Guideline on brick surface preparation.
  • Develop Good Practice Guideline on sewer structure preparation and rehabilitation for concrete junction boxes, wet wells, syphon chambers, overflow structures, etc.
  • Develop Good Practice Guideline for sewer structure cleaning.

These are only a few of the many technical goals set forth by NASSCO. Others include government advocacy in the U.S. and Canada, leadership, software development and building a strong workforce.
