From cars being swept down the Potomac River, to massive sinkholes literally swallowing trucks in Manhattan and fire engines in Los Angeles, to flood waters contaminating public buildings with E. coli in New Jersey, we are seeing the results of neglected water infrastructure.

In addition to aging infrastructure, climate change adaptation and enhanced regulations are compelling communities to invest in water infrastructure and expand green infrastructure.

The Water Environment Federation now offers "Water Is Life, and Infrastructure Makes It Happen," an educational program designed to help communities and their citizens face the challenge. Designed for ratepayers, local leaders and the news media, it teaches the value of water infrastructure and the importance of investing in its long-term stability.

Related public information materials are designed to help utilities and community organizations build public support for investment in water infrastructure. The program has been named to the 2010 Associations Advance America Honor Roll as an outstanding program that has led to significant benefit to American society.
