The American Water Works Association has published AWWA Manual M58, Internal Corrosion Control in Water Distribution Systems. Providing a practical overview of internal corrosion issues, the manual identifies appropriate corrosion response and control methods and outlines a complete corrosion monitoring and control program.
The association notes that water professionals are well-versed in issues caused by internal pipe corrosion but have little practical guidance on the design, implementation, and maintenance of an ongoing internal corrosion control program. The new manual provides an eight-step program to help utilities control internal corrosion in metal pipes and plumbing pipes while ensuring compliance with the U.S. EPA Lead and Copper Rule.
As a result of new research and data, the manual offers a better understanding of some key corrosion concepts now being developed. It offers advice to help water providers determine the extent, magnitude, and possible causes of corrosion; investigate various corrosion control alternatives before implementing the control strategy; implement and monitor the control program; and optimize the control program. The manual is available in the AWWA online bookstore at http://www.awwa.org/M58.
