Hach Company defines Lean operations for water and wastewater

Dedication to Lean methods revolves around four key organizational practices

Hach Company has released a white paper, “Lean Operations for the Water and Wastewater Industry,” that outlines an approach to Lean practices and helps organizations increase efficiency and become more productive.

The approach is based on practices born out of manufacturing but applicable to any industry. The basic principle is to systematically identify and eliminate wasteful elements in processes, according to Chuck Scholpp, director of Integrated Information Management Business Development at Hach.

A Lean approach makes sense in light of budget constraints, a public that resists rate increases, and facilities expected to do more with less, Scholpp observes. The white paper aims to help utilities drive efficiency in day-to-day operations and sustain higher levels of performance. The basic four tenets of Lean Operations are:
* Taking a holistic approach to operations.
* Creating a culture of Lean.
* Automating manual processes.
* Achieving Lean sustainability.
