As municipal wastewater infrastructure ages, utility managers face the ongoing challenge of addressing severe corrosion, wall loss and mechanical damage.
Hydrogen sulfide and constant moisture rapidly accelerate the degradation of steel pipelines, forcing operators to seek rehabilitation methods that minimize costly downtime and avoid complete pipe replacement. To meet these rigorous demands, Denso’s Protal 2800CF and 3200CF composite pipe repair systems offer advanced nonmetallic, structural reinforcement solutions.
“These new composite pipe repair systems are designed to provide a reliable, efficient and cost-effective solution for repairing and reinforcing pipelines in the field,” says Adam McQuillen, marketing service manager for Denso. “We believe these new systems are ideal for those involved in corrosion prevention, pipeline maintenance, infrastructure protection and industrial asset management.”
Protal 2800CF is a biaxial carbon fiber, moisture-cured urethane composite repair system. Supplied as a factory preimpregnated, water-activated wrap, it is explicitly designed for application on dry, damp or even sweating surfaces. In subterranean wastewater environments where ambient humidity is notoriously difficult to control, 2800CF allows crews to rapidly reinforce pipelines and tees suffering from external corrosion and pitting. The presaturated carbon fiber wrap simplifies field installation, noticeably reducing application time while fully restoring structural integrity.
For sewer infrastructure facing more severe degradation — such as extensive metal loss, dynamic dents or critical weld defects — Protal 3200CF provides a heavy-duty alternative. This high-strength, carbon fiber epoxy wet-layup system utilizes a robust multilayer approach. It combines a high-modulus structural filler (Protal 3210) to restore pipe geometry with a VOC-free, high-build corrosion barrier (Protal 7200). The dry carbon fiber fabric is then field-saturated with a specialized two-part epoxy (Protal 3220) to form a dense structural laminate. While requiring a more involved wet-layup process, the 3200CF delivers higher load-bearing capabilities for critical assets.
Both systems are compliant with ASME PCC-2 and ISO 24817 standards, offering a safe, zero-VOC alternative to traditional repairs. In municipal sewer rehabilitation, pipelines are frequently situated in tight, hard-to-access locations like lift stations. Because these carbon fiber systems are highly conformable, they easily wrap around nonstandard geometries — including reducers and elbows — where mechanical clamps would be economically prohibitive.
By forming a durable, load-bearing composite layer that acts in tandem with the host pipe, Denso’s Protal systems halt ongoing corrosion. They efficiently restore vital wastewater assets, extending service life and avoiding traditional pipeline excavation.
