Illinois American Water Plant Receives LEED Certification

Illinois American Water’s new treatment plant in Champaign County has been awarded LEED Certified status. It is the first plant in Illinois to achieve LEED certification and one of the first in the nation. Put into service in December 2008, the plant recycles 100 percent of the water used in the treatment process and has zero discharge. Pervious pavement prevents excess runoff into storm sewers and the administration office is served by a geothermal heating and cooling system. Native prairie plantings surround the plant and provide habitat for wildlife, eliminating the need for mowing, fertilizer, and watering.
