I was recently made aware of a company that used a former employee’s Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program certification number to code pipe conditions. Not only is this practice highly unethical, it is also detrimental to the quality of the assessment conditions recorded, which negatively impacts the customer and, ultimately, our communities.
Initial PACP certification training includes a highly intensive two-day course that covers massive amounts of material to help students learn how to use the PACP header formats; provides information on coding for structural defects, operation and maintenance, and construction/miscellaneous features; provides a hands-on opportunity to practice identifying and coding conditions in the classroom; and includes instruction on how to navigate the PACP manual and use the information it contains while in the field and so much more.
How can you be sure the person you hired to code pipe conditions properly is PACP-certified and that his or her certification is valid? By asking for proper identification of all PACP-certified individuals before the work begins to ensure the name matches the individual’s likeness and by confirming that information on the NASSCO website. Simply go to www.nassco.org/certified-individuals and enter the person’s name to search for his or her certificate number. You can also do this in reverse, entering a certification number to ensure the name of the individual matches. Once the search is complete, the website also populates with the certified individual’s status, identifying upcoming expiration dates for those who need to recertify to keep their knowledge fresh.
If you encounter a company or an individual who is using a PACP certification improperly, please notify NASSCO immediately. This allows us to continue to set standards for the assessment, maintenance and rehabilitation of underground infrastructure and to assure the continued acceptance and growth of trenchless technologies.
