Miniature Horse Rescued From Houston Storm Drain

This isn't the same miniature horse from the story, but it's some sort of sympathetic smallish horse who thinks storm drains should be covered to prevent harrowing incidents like these.

Emergency personnel in Houston, Texas, recently rescued a miniature horse that had fallen into a storm drain in the southwestern part of the city.

The horse was discovered by a police officer who was at the scene of the rescue. According to news reports, the officer had been checking a truck parked on the street to see if it was stolen when he heard a noise nearby. He saw an open storm drain and took a look inside.

“I thought it was a dog, so I jumped back because I thought the dog might be vicious,” the officer tells KPRC News. “So, then I went back over and I looked closer and I said, ‘It’s a horse.’”

Emergency crews and animal experts were called to the scene, where they sedated the horse and cut away a hole around the storm drain. Then, they lifted the animal out with a hoist.

Although it had some visible cuts and scrapes, the mini horse was reportedly in good condition after the ordeal, and it even took a moment to eat some grass as firefighters led it away to a trailer for transportation, according to KPRC reporters.

It's unclear how or why the mini horse wedged itself into the storm drain to begin with, and that's likely to remain one of life's great mysteries — right along with the answer to the question "What is the difference between a miniature horse and a pony?"

KXAN News out of Austin posted a video showing the rescue.
