News Briefs: 5-Year-Old Boy Helps Rescue His Mom From Storm Drain

A young boy in Illinois recently became a hero after his mom took a tumble into a storm drain while doing yard work.

According to WGEM News, Shay Williams was working in her yard with her 5-year-old son, Lincoln, when she stepped on a storm drain cover that gave way. She caught herself by the elbows, but needed Lincoln to go get help to save her from a more serious fall.

Austin, Texas Launches Program to Promote Recycled Water Use

The City of Austin, Texas, recently approved its GoPurple initiative, which aims to boost the use of recycled water for purposes like irrigation and toilets. The program incentivizes new developments to connect to the existing reclaimed water system and install on-site reuse systems. 

To fund this infrastructure expansion, a new $1.47 community benefit charge will be added to residents' water bills. Austin Water also offers optional Purple Choice programs for additional benefits. GoPurple is expected to save millions of gallons of potable water per day by 2040.

California Governor Unveils Water Plan Amid Climate Concerns

In a snowy setting at Phillips Station, California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently showcased the state's commitment to adapting its water resources plan to climate change. Observing the annual snowpack survey, which found levels slightly above average, the governor highlighted the precarious nature of relying on the Sierra snowpack due to climate change. 

Despite recent fluctuations between severe drought and record snowfalls, officials anticipate a 10% reduction in water supply from snowmelt within the next 20 years, underscoring the need for strategic water management.
