A recent manhole explosion on the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock caused fires and power outages, prompting evacuations and the cancellation of classes for the remainder of the week.
Initially reported as a substation explosion, authorities later confirmed the source as a manhole. No injuries were reported. The incident triggered a campus-wide power shutdown for repairs, with power gradually restored the following day.
6 Countries Represented in 2025 Brew 2.0 Cohort
Ten water technology startups from six countries will receive targeted training, global network connections and the opportunity to showcase their innovations to potential investors and customers as part of the 2025 cohort of The Water Council’s BREW 2.0 Post-Accelerator.
The cohort was selected from applications representing a record-breaking 19 countries, narrowed down to 10 companies from six countries, including the first participants from Brazil. The companies will receive several weeks of virtual training, culminating in an in-person week in Milwaukee. This year’s public event will feature a new, interactive format with a mix of short pitches and exhibits. The event, dubbed BREW Showcase, will take place June 19.

Water Cooperative Breaks Ground on Landmark RO Facility
The Polk Regional Water Cooperative recently broke ground on its Southeast Water Production Facility in Lake Wales, Florida. The ceremony marked the start of construction on the first reverse osmosis water treatment plant in central Florida, representing a major milestone in securing sustainable water resources for the region.
Located along Boy Scout Camp Road in Lake Wales, the facility will utilize brackish water from the Lower Floridan Aquifer to produce up to 12.5 mgd of high-quality drinking water for distribution to 10 PRWC member utilities.
