Lake Mead, the nation's largest reservoir, has plummeted to its lowest water level since its creation behind the Hoover Dam in the 1930s, signaling a deepening crisis for the Colorado River system. According to data released Aug. 7 by the US Bureau of Reclamation, the reservoir dropped to 1,040.5 feet Aug. 6, slipping past the previous July 2022 record of 1,040.58 feet.
The alarming decline of the reservoir threatens a 1,400-mile waterway that sustains 40 million people across seven states, irrigates more than 5 million acres of farmland and powers roughly 700,000 homes.
Senators Introduce Water Cyber Shield Act After Minnesota Cyberattacks
Democratic Senators Adam Schiff of California and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota have introduced the Water Cyber Shield Act in an effort to defend the nation's water infrastructure against digital threats. The legislative push follows a coordinated cyberattack last month that targeted the operational technology of more than 30 municipal water and wastewater systems across Minnesota.
The proposed bill would inject $300 million annually into state revolving funds specifically for cybersecurity enhancements. It also would authorize the EPA to conduct security assessments and mandate necessary corrective actions. Under the new act, the EPA would also collaborate with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the National Institute of Standards and Technology to establish baseline digital safety standards for drinking water systems.
