The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s Rural Infrastructure Fund program awarded money to multiple communities, including the following:
· City of Apalachicola ($300,000), to conduct planning and design for improvements to the city’s stormwater conveyance system
· City of Belle Glade ($291,732), to conduct planning and design for stormwater improvements throughout the city’s downtown area
The town of Norwood (Massachusetts) received a $50,000 grant from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council’s Accelerating Climate Resiliency Grant Program. It will be used for advancing green stormwater retrofits at Norwood’s Cleveland School and Savage Center. The project aims to clean stormwater, reduce flood risk to the buildings and provide community education and exemplars of green stormwater infrastructure.
Dr. Mahbubur Meenar received an Outstanding Community Engagement and Education Award from the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association. He is an associate professor in the department of Geography, Planning and Sustainability within Rowan University’s School of Earth & Environment. The honor recognizes Meenar’s work for a multi-year project, “Greening Waterfront South,” that he led to address flooding and stormwater runoff in the city of Camden’s Waterfront South neighborhood.
The township of Hillsborough received a $246,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to upgrade and restore Fox Chase Pond. Hillsborough will use the money to reduce pollutant loads to Fox Chase Pond, stabilize the pond’s eroding shoreline, restore a vegetative buffer and educate the public about the importance of stormwater management and green infrastructure.
