Worth Noting - June 2023

People/Awards

Jim Meehan was hired as the director of public works for the city of Norwalk (Connecticut). Stormwater management is among his areas of expertise.

The California Department of Water Resources awarded $15 million to support projects in the San Joaquin Valley through the Integrated Regional Water Management Program. Among them is a Stormwater Capture and Groundwater Recharge project. The Pixley Irrigation District will construct a 5½-mile long canal to provide surface water for irrigation to 5,500 acres of land. The project will increase flood protection for downstream infrastructure, crops and 1,000 residents of Alpaugh, while also capturing floodwater when available for recharge. The Kings Basin Water Authority and the city of Bakersfield also received funding to increase stormwater storage, improve flood protection and pump surface water into basins in Parlier.

The New England Water Environment Association presented Tuscan Village, a multi-use development in Salem, New Hampshire, with its Green Steps Award in recognition of innovation and sustainability in its approach to stormwater and wastewater. The engineering firm of Tighe & Bond led the floodplain improvement phase of the project, which addresses stormwater, environmental and floodplain accommodation needs across the entire property.

The New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association presented Dr. Mahbubur Meenar, an associate professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and Sustainability within Rowan University’s School of Earth & Environment, with its Outstanding Community Engagement and Education Award. The award recognizes his work for a multiyear project, “Greening Waterfront South,” that addressed flooding and stormwater runoff in Camden’s Waterfront South neighborhood.
