With NASSCO’s 2018 Annual Conference behind us and an exciting future ahead with the appointment of Sheila Joy as our new executive director, we look forward to recalibrating and identifying ways to improve our service to the industry.
To accomplish that goal, we conducted extensive research among our members to identify areas where NASSCO can serve you better. Additionally, we wanted to understand how, collectively, we can work with our members and others within the industry to address issues that affect us all.
Conducted last fall, the research methodology included six separate online surveys specific to each of our member groups, which include contractors, professional engineers, public agencies, manufacturers and suppliers, individuals, and ancillary members. Our goal was to validate (or invalidate) our internal perceptions and uncover additional areas of focus for NASSCO moving forward. Some of the top findings include:
- Contractor members perform work in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, with some also performing underground assessment, maintenance and repairs in Canada.
- Among all trenchless technologies, the inspection and assessment category is the No. 1 service performed by contractors, followed by cured-in-place pipe, manhole rehabilitation, grouting and pipe bursting. We also identified a rise in the application of gunite/spin casting technologies among this group, which is an example of information that will help us as we expand our focus on additional technologies for specification guidelines and training.
- When it comes to concern levels regarding legislative issues including tax cuts, 21 percent of contractors are “very concerned.” Concern levels increased among the engineer member group with 55 percent stating they are “very concerned.” Helping our members stay informed as legislative changes occur will benefit them and help promote a unified voice to support our position on initiatives that affect our industry.
- We asked our members: “What keeps you up at night?” The No. 1 concern among contractors is safety. Competition, employee drug and alcohol addiction, getting work, succession planning, making payroll, and hiring/retaining employees are other issues that are of major concern to contractors. This information is of critical importance as we focus on the issues that matter most.
NASSCO’s mission is to set standards for the assessment, maintenance and rehabilitation of underground infrastructure and to assure the continued acceptance and growth of trenchless technologies. We believe the most important thing we can do at this stage of NASSCO’s growth is to listen to our members and help address those issues that will support them and our mission.
