A former clerk-treasurer of Oolitic, Indiana, was arrested after being accused of embezzling nearly $80,000 from the town’s water utility payments. The suspect surrendered herself to the Lawrence County Jail and faces a charge of official misconduct following an investigation by the Indiana State Police and the Indiana State Board of Accounts.

The investigation, which began in 2015, revealed significant discrepancies in the town's water utility accounts, with 98 payments not fully deposited and 157 checks showing incorrect payment amounts.

Balloon Hits Power Line and Triggers Boil-Water Advisory in New Orleans

A boil-water advisory was issued for the East Bank of New Orleans and Algiers Point after a foil balloon struck a power line, briefly causing an outage at the Carrollton Water Treatment Plant.

Entergy New Orleans reported that the mylar balloon caused a brief power fluctuation, which tripped pumps offline, leading to a drop in water pressure below the threshold needed to avoid the advisory. The Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans confirmed that the advisory is precautionary as crews work to restore power and water pressure in the affected areas.

EPA Seeks Input On Microbial and Disinfection Byproducts Rule Revisions

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is inviting small public water systems to participate as Small Entity Representatives providing advice and recommendations to a Small Business Advocacy Review panel.

Building on past extensive EPA engagement with stakeholders, this SBAR panel will focus on the agency’s development of potential revisions to one or more of the current Microbial and Disinfection Byproducts in the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations, including Stage 1 and Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rules; Surface Water Treatment Rule; Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule; and Long-Term 1 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule.
